4 Bridges of the City

This is the essential walk for a fundamental
understanding of the history of the City.
Crossing the Thames via Tower Bridge,
London Bridge, Southwark and the
Millenium footbridge, this spectacular walk
links the glories of the Tower of London and
St. Paul's Cathedral.
Along the way, we include the history of the
Old London Bridge. Designed by Peter, the
chaplain of the church of St. Mary
Colechurch in the City, this bridge was to
become a glorious testament to the last 30
years of his life. With its shops and houses,
its drawbridge gate, and even a chapel
dedicated to Saint Thomas Becket, this
bridge lasted for over 600 years and
became the wonder of Europe. We will view
a model of the bridge, and we will be able
to touch stones from the ancient bridge.
From 1209 when Old London Bridge was
opened, to 2002 when the Millenium Bridge
was reopened (after the 'wobble' had been
corrected) this walk spans eight centuries,
crossing four times over the 'liquid history'
of the Thames.
As an added bonus after this walk, we can
usually arrange free access into St. Paul's
Cathedral.
This walk starts at 1.30pm every
Tuesday; just meet at the giant sundial
above Tower Hill tube station. We finish
by 3.30pm at St. Paul's tube station.
The walk costs £5 per person with
proceeds going to 'Oxfam' and 'Cancer
Research UK'.
